Fall in Love with Paris

Ugh!!!! If one more person says that to me, with their hands clasped, eyes wide, smiling and giddy, I will be forced to punch them in throat. Paris has so much more to offer than romance. Although the city it will do it’s best to seduce you and cause you to fall in love with Paris.

Paris has always been very inspiring to me. So many talented people have at one time or another called it home. It was almost as if I could feel myself soaking up the creative energy of the city. Getting lost in the Musée du Louvre for the day or walking around the Montmartre area all afternoon. Breathing in the bohemian vibe of days gone by. Days when Salvador Dali, Amodiglai, Claude Monet, Oscar Wilde, Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway or Vincent van Gogh were struggling artists who worked or had studios in the area.

The streets of Paris are like artwork themselves

Small tree lined, cobblestone streets punctuated with black wrought iron street lights. Similar to the ones that Gene Kelly spun around in Singing in the Rain. Along all of these streets are small restaurants, flower shops, boutiques and food shops with people spilling out of them. Above the shops are beautiful apartments built with old beige brick with large glass windows opening up onto black wrought iron balconies. The streets are actually beautiful.

One of the biggest reasons to fall in love with Paris is The Seine,  the river that pulses through the heart of Paris. Grabbing a crepe from a sidewalk vendor and walking along side the river it is impossible not to feel elated. There is also a boat, BATOBUS. It is like the hop on hop off bus but a boat that travels the Seine and arrives at most of the major attractions the city has on offer. It is enjoyable to just ride the boat without getting off and to appreciate the beauty of the city from a different perspective.

One of my most favourite past times is people-watching, which is incredible in this city. The people watching is as extensive as the historical architecture. I like to try to imagine each person’s story. Where are they coming from? Where are they going? Why are they in Paris?

The best place to do this is at the top of the hill of Montmartre where the Basilica of Sacré Coeur is. A stunningly beautiful white cathedral with almost 250 steps to its top. On a clear day you get an unparalleled view of Paris. It is easy to pass an afternoon simply sitting on the steps of the Basilica looking out over this incredible city, getting lost in thought.

Say it with love

Parisians put the same love and devotion they have for their art and architecture into creating their food. The food in Paris is unlike any I have had anywhere else in the world. Perhaps it is because they focus on one type and hone their craft. You buy cheese from the cheese shop, bread and pastries from the bakery, meat from the butcher and wine from the wine shop. Each item producing a flavour so rich and beautiful you must  slow down to savour every bite. Even the food in Paris is a work of art. If nothing else causes you to fall in love with Paris, the food will.

I have only touched on a few of my favourite things to do in Paris, there are so many more. My point is, that to talk about this incredible city and only mention romance is heartbreakingly unfair. However, I do agree that Paris is for lovers; lovers of art, lovers of music, lovers of cheese, lovers of fashion, lovers of wine and lovers of dessert. That’s the thing about life, the love of it and all it has to offer is the most beautiful thing in the world.
